5 Tips to Keep Your Home Spotless While Listed
You've gone through the hard work or sorting, organizing and cleaning. You've shined every surface. Photos have been taken and your home looks pristine and ready to sell. And now the hard work begins. Unfortunately, most homes do not sell the day they are listed. Consequently, if your home is listed you must attempt to maintain that pristine appearance while your home is on the market. This task can be quite the challenge, especially if you have kids in the home. However, following a few tips can make maintaining appearances quite a bit easier.
#1 Get some clear bins
Simply put, the less amount of things you have out in the house, the less you have to keep perfectly neat. Head to a big box store and invest in a good number of clear bins (good news, this time of the year they're often on sale!). Go through closets and rooms and stow away items that you don't need to use on a daily basis. Having uniform, stacked bins in the garage has a much better appearance than precarious stacks of items.
In addition, keep at least one bin empty in the home. Especially if you have kids around, right before a showing you'll want a bin that you can go around the house throwing miscellaneous items into. You can just throw that bin in your car when you take off during the showing.
#2 Clean on the go
Cleaning may have been a weekly (or let's be honest, bi-weekly) event before having your house on the market. However, while your home is listed cleaning will become a daily, hour by hour habit. Every time you finish an activity or leave a room, make it your goal to leave it looking like you weren't in there. Make the bed right when you get up. Fold the laundry straight from the dryer and immediately put it away. After using the bathroom, wipe down all surfaces. Cleaning as you go will take a little extra time, but will save a lot of stress when that phone call comes saying someone wants to see your home in an hour.
#3 Limit bathroom use
Now by this tip we don't mean limit your bathroom needs. What we mean is try to use only one to two bathrooms in the home. Most of us don't have to use every single bathroom in our space. Limiting use to one or two bathrooms means less to clean and maintain. The fewer toilets you have to scrub at the last minute, the better off you'll be.
#4 Rotate kids' toys
Toys and kids can be a disastrous combination when trying to keep your home pristine. Remember those plastic bins? They come in very handy here. Before listing your home, store most toys and books in bins. Only bring out one to two bins at a time for the kids to play with. You can rotate which bins are out every few days, but this method will limit the amount of last minute clutter you have to clean up. Is there a particular set of toys that you know your kids tend to make big messes with? It might be time to hide those away until after the house sells.
#5 Consider sending the pets on vacation
If you're expecting to have a lot of showings, now might be the time to send your furry friends on a vacation. Ask if any friends or families would mind having a house guest for a week or two. Having your four legged friends out of the house will help you keep things clean and will reduce the stress of having a house ready to show at a moment's notice.
